New Patronage Announced, Updated Official Site + Portrait Plans

Good evening Duchess Kate readers. I hope you're having an enjoyable weekend!

It was announced earlier this week that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry have become patrons of 100 Women in Hedge Funds philanthropic initiatives. It is a fundraising arm for professionals in investment management industry and over the next three years the organisation will support royal charities Action on Addiction, Well Child and The Art Room. William has been a patron of the organisation since 2010 and it seemed a natural choice.

William and Kate's official website has been redone and I must say it looks great! Much more user friendly with a nice selection of updates. To read the section about Kate which includes many lovely pictures, a biography and information on royal duties and charities please click here.

There is an interesting page on The Princes' Charities Forum, a collection of charities of which William, Kate and Harry are patrons. The Princes founded the Forum in 2006 as a way to bring their individual charitable interests together and to explore how they could best lend their support to them all in an effective and efficient way.

The Charities Forum meets biannually, with each organisation taking its turn to host the group. The meetings provide an opportunity for collaborative activity between the organisations and Their Royal Highnesses.

These photos are new to me and were quite possibly taken in April when the Cambridges were photographed leaving a Forum meeting.

Kate wore the Ted Baker Stardy Blouse at the April meeting. The long sleeved blouse featured front bib detail, concealed button fastening, small stand collar and button fastening on the cuffs.

In other news, The Telegraph's Tim Walker revealed work is under way on an official portrait of the Duchess for the National Portrait Gallery:

'Kate Middleton will hang in the National Portrait Gallery. Work on an official study on the Duchess of Cambridge is, I am told, under way. The identity of the artist is a closely guarded secret, but Nicky Philipps, who undertook a private commission to paint her and was seen as the favourite for the job, tells me she is not doing it. My guess is it's Jemma Phipps, whose study of the Duke of Edinburgh was well regarded'.

Jemma Phipps' portrait of Prince Philip shows the work of a very talented artist. We've heard various rumours about plans for the portrait over the past year and it would seem the project is finally coming to fruition. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Unless there is an unexpected sighting, we'll continue on with the 'Kate Loves' section next.

Charlotte- Thank you for another great post. There are some great new pictures of the beautiful Duchess and William. In one I noticed that the Duchess did not have on her engagement ring just her wedding band. I was really surprised.

Also I am really excited about the portrait of the Duchess. I hope we will get to see it. I hope William liked the surprise portrait she had commissioned for his 30th birthday. Wish we could get a peak at it. I bet it is really a beautiful picture.

Again thank you Charlotte for this great blog. You are the best.

    2. Catherine always wears her wedding band, doesn't she?
Is it below her engagement ring? Just asking :)

    3. I haven't seen the pictures referenced, but is it possible she was doing something that it might have gotten caught on/gotten in the way? I bought a gorgeous leaf-patterned ring once and happily put it on and went to work, only to realize that the delicate leaves constantly snagged my rubber gloves. Not that Kate is filling test tubes on a daily basis but I bet a rock of that size might be a bit annoying to manage in some situations.

Their website is really professional, really well done.

    4. I think she is referring to the fourth picture down, where Kate is gesturing with her hands and only her wedding band is visible on her left hand?

Who knows, maybe she prefers not to wear the ring in professional settings - it's a gorgeous ring but it's also so large and attention-grabbing that maybe it's not appropriate for all situations. I always laugh when I remember the story about Diana picking out the largest, most gaudy ring in the selection . . . that's probably what I would have done as a 19/20 year old too! Just gone for the bling without thinking about whether a huge ring was practical for everyday wear!

Yes it was the foruth picture down. she always wears her engagement ring. She even had it on when she was camping with the children. But I am sure there is a good reason she did not have it on that day, maybe getting it cleaned??? Was just surprising to see her without it. No biggie.

    6. Yeah I could just see it being that the ring is a bit cumbersome to wear all the time, as it's so big.

  5. Hi Charlotte,

Thanks for the update on official site - I'm not sure I would have found it on my own!

Just out of curiosity, what happened to your blogroll (it use to be underneath the blog archive)? It has disappeared from my screen (but it could be my browser, I use Firefox with AdBlock). It use to work fine and I would always check here first and then see what else was going on. Now, it's not there and I didn't bookmark the pages! :'(.

    Thanks,
    Holly

    1. Hi Holly,

Unfortunately there were issues with the gadget. Blogger is wonderful but there have been a whole host of issues lately, luckily all resolved with the exception of the blogroll gadget. I expect it should be up and running again very shortly.

Lovely pictures; she looks very business like and very beautiful.
I have always thought that meetings etc for their charities went on under the radar, or they could not gather the money needed for the scholarships and all the other things they back.
Looking forward to Thursday and thank you Charlotte for keeping us going until then!

  10. Thank you for a great post! I’m glad to hear they have a new patronage and it was lovely to see some new photos.
I took a look at the new website, and I think it’s fantastic! Much better than the old one, it’s easier to navigate, modern and informative. I like it. And the quizzes are really fun :)
I’m really looking forward to seeing the portrait. Tons of pictures have been taken of Kate but a painted portrait is a very special thing!

  11. I noticed the pic of Kate without the engagement ring too and it's not the first time she's been pictured wearing her wedding band but not the engagement ring. Interesting. I've often wondered if perhaps Kate wasn't a bit disappointed to get THAT ring? Maybe wanted one that she picked out for herself? The ring is meaningful to William and Harry, of course, but has no especial meaning or sentimental value for Kate, who never met or knew Princess Diana.

Good Morning Jane- I have to disagree with you regarding the Duchess being maybe a little disappointed receiving Princess Di's engagement ring. I feel she thought it was an honor to be given something so special to William, being how much he loved & missed his beloved mother. It just showed how much he love's Catherine and he wanted to make sure that his mother was close to them on their wedding day.

William can always go out and buy her another ring if she really wanted another one. I think too it was an honor to wear the ring of my mother in law that died so young and who was loved by the whole world.

    2. I hardly think that's the case. I suspect that in these pow-wow business meetings they want to keep the "royal frill" at bay because of the administrative and private, rather than the symbolic, public/promotional nature of the event. Hence the business suits that all of us wear. They want to be seen as partners, decision makers and listeners rather than the "overbearing boss thing" that would intimidate anyone, I suspect.

If anything, the Duchess is in love with her ring. There are a few snapshots of her at a more stealing loving glances at it! :) I would too!! Sildi

I really like the new websites, too. Great pics!!

    3. I sometimes wish Kate had a different engagement ring - this one has a not so happy past...and I also feel for Harry as apparently it was what he chose when Diana passed away but I think I heard that the boys agreed whoever got married first would use the ring (I may be wrong) although I do understand why it is so important to William.

Charlotte - as I've said before - Thank You!! for all your hard work - I really enjoy your posts (although the comments have developed a life of their own of late...)keep up the great work, it is appreciated.

    4. I would imagine that given the ring belonged to William's late mother it is also pretty special for Catherine. It is big though! I'd wager she doesn't wear it around the house ;)

    5. I believe the ring means even more to Kate given the sentimental value it has. I also suspect that the ring was intended to be used by William (for his wife) so that it would be passed on to a future Queen, as originally intended. I agree that it's a rather large rock and there are times it may be too big, but it seems that Kate wears it proudly because she knows how much it means to William.

  13. I noticed the engagement ring missing as well. But, a big ring can snag on lots of things, even hair, and I often took mine off. I have noticed pictures of Diana with just her wedding ring also. Practocal to not wear it all the time. Wearing Diana's ring makes William happy, and she is happiest when he is happy. I am sure she knew what it meant to William for her to wear his mother's ring.

  14. I saw the ring in person on Diana's finger, it was huge!! I remember reading her choosing the biggest and gaudiest one too!! Can't imagine it was what kate would choose. Wonder how she feels wearing it and what must Charles and camilla think haha!!

I am sorry but who cares what Charles & Camilla thinks. In my opinion they are the one's who made Diana's life & the Prince's life hell. I think she feel's it is an honor to wear the ring. It means so much to William and she want's to make him happy.

I read that our favorite royal couple went to the cinema, in Llandudno, to see the new James Bond movie :) Too bad there were not pictures of them on this occasion, but it's ok, they really deserve their privacy.

  17. I was kind of going the artist who painted William & Harry a couple years ago would paint Kate's first official portrait, I always thought it was so well done & relaxed, something I think Kate will enjoy. Then again, maybe she'll wear an official royal outfit like Phillip & wear a tiara. -Brit
